Haunted by his failure to save a child from a suicidal madman, hostage negotiator Jeff Tally leaves Los Angeles to become police chief of upscale suburb Bristo Camino. But the ghosts of Tally's previous field come back to haunt him when two brothers and their mysterious traveling companion Mars Krupchek take a suburbanite family hostage after a failed robbery. Unbenknownst to the gunmen, their hostage is actually a numbers runner for West Coast kingpin Sonny Benza, and the house contains evidence that put him away. Facing heat from associates in New York, Benza kidnaps Tally's wife and daughter and blackmails him into procuring the incriminating evidence. But the situation escalates even further when Tally discovers that Mars is a serial killer who is eyeing the hostages, and possibly his accomplices, to be his next victims.
In a small town in California, the chief of police Jeff Talley is facing relationship problems with his teenager daughter. One year later, he was the prime police negotiator in Los Angeles, but after an unsuccessful negotiation, he gave-up his position and decided to move with his family to a calmer life. When three punks invade the house of Walter Smith, a wealthy accountant, and jeopardize his family, holding them hostage, Jeff's family is abducted by powerful criminals to force him to retrieve a DVD with bank accountings' information kept in Walter's office.
Bruce Willis plays Jeff Talley, which is basically the same character from his Die Hard films. He&#39;s one of the best hostage negotiators around but one case goes horribly wrong. So, he quits and moves his family out of LA. He is now the sheriff, in a rich area with very little crime.<br/><br/>Then you have the 3 bad guys who want to steal a nice SUV out of this family&#39;s garage. But things get out of hand and they hold a man and his 2 kids hostage. Unfortunately for them, the man, Walter Smith, laundries money for criminals and they want a CD from inside the house. Plus Mars one of the bad guys is really a sick psycho who has killed before unbeknown to the 2 brothers who have been hanging with him.<br/><br/>The criminals kidnap Talley&#39;s family and basically want him to keep everyone away until they send their own people in to get the CD. The boy escapes and gets a cell phone and talks with Talley. Talley uses this inside knowledge to try to help the boy and his family survive while still keeping his family alive. Then the ending was good because I didn&#39;t expect what happened.<br/><br/>As for the action, it was mostly good. The guy who played Mars did a good job as a total psycho. And I thought the plot had something original in it; it didn&#39;t seem stale-like I&#39;d seen it before. Much better than the last Die Hard film.<br/><br/>FINAL VERDICT: If you like action movies, then you will probably find this film entertaining. I liked it, so I recommend it.
This is the WORST movie we have seen in at least 5 years And we were DIE-Hard fans (get-it?) Too over the top, predictable, and non-intellectual Wait 5 more days for it to be on video, if it makes it that far There was NO character depth Bruce was trying for an Oscar too many times with lots of crocodile tears It was a combo of that other loser movie where the rich people get trapped in their own house by criminals and a BAD version of die-hard or rambo … Complete with the typical Black cop, buddy of Bruce, side-kick … Bruce&#39;s daughter is in it and has about 5 words and a couple of screams Bruce&#39;s brother co-produced it Hope they lose a ton of money on this loser Ashamed Bruce is from Jersey George and Sue
What sends this initially tense thriller over the precipice is a plot scheme that never knows when enough is enough.
